The Gastroenterologist must possess a medical degree, must be licensed to practice medicine in Kentucky, and must possess the following required skills and knowledge Extensive knowledge of the upper and lower gastric tract; experience using the upper and lower endoscopy device, PEGs, and dilation equipment; complete knowledge of gastrointestinal disease and conditions; ability to diagnose and treat GI disorders including Crohns disease, ulcerative colitis, irritable bowel syndrome, motility disorders, cirrhosis, and other digestive diseases; perform procedures such as colonoscopy, upper GI endoscopy, sigmoidoscopy, capsule endoscopy to examine the small intestine, anorectal and esophageal manometry, PEGfeeding tube placement, endoscopic treatment of Barretts esophagus, polypectomy, and more; prescribing medications to treat digestive disorders; referring patients to specialists if further diagnostic testing or treatment is needed.
