Job Duties: We have a cow-calf operation. In November, we separate the calves and feed them in a separate lot. We “bunk-break” the calves and feed them until January, when we bring them to market. We feed the cows all winter with a feed wagon, mixing up a feed ratio. When it is really cold, we put out more straw for them. The most important time for ranchers is the winter, to keep the animals safe and warm. It is just me, and during the summer, they are out to pasture, which requires a lot less tending. Job duties will include: attaching farm implements such as plows, discs, sprayers, or harvesters to tractors using bolts and hand tools; operating tractors; loading and unloading crops; cleaning work areas and maintaining grounds and landscaping; transporting animals, crops, or equipment; cleaning stalls, pens, and equipment using disinfectant solutions, brushes, shovels, water hoses, or pumps; driving farm trucks, tractors, and other equipment to distribute feed to animals; feeding and watering livestock and monitoring food and water supplies; grooming, clipping, trimming, or castrating animals; docking ears and tails, or shearing coats to collect hair; inspecting, maintaining, and repairing equipment, machinery, buildings, pens, yards, and fences; marking livestock to identify ownership and grade using brands, tags, paint, or tattoos; mixing feed, additives, and medicines in prescribed portions; and caring for animals and transporting animals, crops, or equipment.
